Release the Doom Ponies!

I had planned to be spending today on something else altogether, but this morning I spotted this on Twitter:

and it fired my imagination, so this was the result.

Inktober Day 31

Done at last, and only 4 days late!  Since I started the challenge almost that late and caught up, I'm still sort of on time, right?

So, as I intimated before, this is a portrait of my kids in their Halloween costumes for this year.  I'm biased, but I do think they're pretty darned adorable.

When I set out to make this last piece in the challenge, I knew it meant I'd be a day late - I could not get the reference photos of my kids in costume until the end of the day, after all, and that meant not even starting until after dinner at best.  So I decided to wait until November 1st to begin.  Then, to do it justice, it took longer than I planned.  Last night, I was hard at work on it until close to 1am, and concluded I should stop and finish it in the morning - I estimated I had a couple of hours remaining, but maybe less.  Unfortunately, I've also been dealing with an extremely persistent cold my whole family caught a couple weeks ago, and last night the coughing kept me awake for nearly 3 more hours.  Taking pity on me, my lovely wife let me stay in bed come morning, and took the kids off to school for me, so I slept most of the morning away.  When I finally sat down to finish, I discovered that Windows had seen fit to reboot itself, and the last ~4 hours of work I'd put in were gone.  I could've sworn I'd saved - several times - but it seems not.  So instead of finishing it off, I had to redo about a third of it first. Still though, I'm really pleased with the final result.

Still Mapping

As I mentioned yesterday, I've been all about the maps lately.  Over the next few days I'll be posting various local and regional maps that will be appearing in forthcoming editions of Whispers of Heaven and ShatterStar, the first two volumes of Krista Rose's Saga of the Rose.

Today is actually just part of the first local map which will appear at the beginning of Part 1 for ShatterStar.  When it's totally finished, there will also be a cross-section of the main city building (which you can see here coming out of the mountain on the right side of the image), depicting major interior features.  That part is not finished yet, but this image of the larger valley where Cedralysone, the elven enclave where much of the book takes place, is done, and I'll be making the two parts as separate images anyway, so I thought I'd go ahead and post this as-is.
